Do you ever catch yourself dreaming of a better life, taking exotic vacations, having a supportive partner, or enjoying a fulfilling career? Yet, when reality hits, self-doubt suggests these dreams are just "pie in the sky"? That's your inner child feeling neglected. This is the part of you that links to creativity, curiosity, and pure joy, often suppressed by the demands of adulthood.
A Personal Story
Back in my university days, I was an ambitious art student in London. I had a grand vision of success, but felt utterly lost and lonely. My teachers pushed me creatively, but offered little guidance on navigating the art world. The weight of expectations, both my own and from others, became suffocating.
One day, overwhelmed and in tears, I began questioning everything. It was during this vulnerable moment that an unexpected question activated my journey: "What is your picture of fulfillment like?"
This simple question, from a kind priest I met in Pimlico, stopped me in my tracks. It forced me to confront a truth – I had no idea what true happiness meant for me. Everyone asked about my goals and ambitions, but no one ever asked about my deepest desires.
Reclaiming Your Inner Voice
As adults, practicality often takes precedence over imagination. But what if the key to unlocking our full potential lies in reconnecting with our inner child? That curious, imaginative spark that fuels our dreams.
The good news is, it's never too late to reconnect. Here are a few ways to create a safe space for your inner child to flourish:
Meditation/Journaling:Â Light a candle, take a deep breath, and envision yourself as a child, free from social norms and expectations. In this moment, you can act without concern for others' opinions. Ask yourself once more, "What do you truly desire?" A growing sense of joy arises, allowing you to connect with your complete self. After meditating, jot down your unfiltered dreams, frustrations, and desires.
Vision Boards:Â Create a collage of images that represent your ideal life. This can include words, pictures, and drawings, which you can keep in a folder on your phone to serve as a constant reminder of what you truly deserve.
Creative Play: Dedicate time to a creative project solely for fun and expressing your emotions and ideas, without judgement. Remember, your inner child doesn't care about your achievements or societal expectations. It simply wants to be seen, heard, and loved for who you truly are.
Embrace Your Wonder
Consider this: what genuinely brings you happiness? What fills your heart with joy? By reconnecting with your inner child, you tap into a source of creativity, self-compassion, and motivation to chase your dreams.
This journey of self-discovery will not only empower you but also inspire those around you. It's time to reclaim your sense of wonder and embrace the fullness of who you are. You deserve to lead a life that ignites your inner flame.
